Pregnancy planning should begin the moment you decide to have a baby. Even if you are not wishing to try conceiving at the moment, it never hurts to begin preparing right away. There are things you can do to get yourself ready to carry a little one for nine months. Pregnancy planning is beneficial when hoping for a smooth pregnancy.
Pregnancy Planning to Get your Body Ready
Go off Birth Control - Birth control should be discontinued within 2-3 months before trying to get pregnant. This will make it easier for you to conceive, as you have given your body time to regulate its cycles. Pregnancy planning should begin with this, so it is important to be sure you want a baby before going off birth control. I personally stopped my birth control 3 months before we started trying, and was able to get pregnant within 2 months.
Consider Medical Conditions - Chronic illnesses should be completely under control before you begin trying for a baby. The doctor should be well aware of your pregnancy planning to ensure that the drugs you take won't put your growing baby at risk. There may be specific arrangements that need to be made before your attempt to get pregnant.
Vitamins and Supplements – Start to take multivitamin daily if you are not currently doing so. I took that before my pregnancy planning began, but switched to a pre-natal vitamin the moment I decided to have a baby. Also, discuss any supplements or herbal remedies you are taking with your doctor. There may be things that you should stop taking while trying for and carrying a baby.
Pregnancy Planning For Older Women
Schedule a Doctor's Visit – If you have past the age of 30, you should schedule for a thorough check-up, to ensure your body is ready for having a baby. We all know that fertility issues may arise with age, so discussing the options with your doctor is crucial.
Be Inform of the Risks – It is important to be knowledgeable on the increased risks involved with pregnancy planning later in life. Certain disorders are more prominent in babies who were born to older women. However, do not be discouraged, it does not happen to everyone. I personally know many older women who have had perfectly healthy children when they delivered their babies at 35 and even 40 years of age.
Changes in Diet And Lifestyle
Eat Healthy – Staying healthy, above all, is the most important thing to do, and you begin with watching what you eat. Junk foods, besides contribute to weight gain, is the common reason for infertility in women. Limit your intake of fats and calories, and develop healthy meal plans. Incorporate foods high in vitamins and minerals to increase your chances of being able to conceive when the time is right.
Stay Away from Cigarettes and Alcohol - These are two things that can decrease a woman's fertility. It is also helpful if the man avoids these habits, as they can have an impact on his sperm production as well. Avoiding smoking and drinking will only boost your capability of getting pregnant, and a healthy pregnancy.
Avoid Caffeine - Not only can caffeine harbor your ability to get pregnant, it can also have a negative effect on the growing baby inside you once you manage to conceive. This additive has been known to raise the fetus' heart rate for no apparent reason, which causes concerns of damage. For this reason, I stopped drinking coffee and soft drinks the moment I began my pregnancy planning.
It is never too early to begin your pregnancy planning. I recommend that all women who wish to become pregnant within the next year begin thinking about changes to make in their lifestyles.
