3 Common Mistakes Made When Losing Weight After Pregnancy

Losing weight after pregnancy may be a priority for some new mothers. However, there are a lot of factors that can attribute to how quickly the weight can be lost. With so much to do and a new baby to take care of, it can be hard to know how to lose the weight. There are several mistakes that a new mom can make when trying to lose weight after pregnancy, with three common ones listed below.

Neglecting Proper Nutrition

Nutrition is just as vital after pregnancy as it was before and during the pregnancy. This is especially true if you plan to begin losing weight after pregnancy. Many women believe they should cut down on their calories after having the baby to ensure proper weight loss. However, new mothers still needed the added nutrition that extra food brings, especially if they are breastfeeding.

What worked for me was to plan 4-5 simple meals throughout the day. Some days I even set an alarm so I would not forget to eat because I was too tired or busy with the baby. This method proved to beneficial for me, as I still began losing weight after pregnancy even with eating healthy.

Exercising Too Soon

After giving birth to their new baby, many women believe that exercise is immediately necessary to begin losing weight after pregnancy. However, it is a bad idea to start a program too soon. Most moms take 6 weeks to completely heal after birth, but it can be a longer recovery for those who had a C-section.

Beginning an exercise program too soon can lead to a great risk of injury, additional pain and discomfort, or improper weight loss. Losing weight after pregnancy will eventually require being active, but it is important that it be a slow and cautious process.

Missing Out on Proper Sleep and Rest

There is no doubt that a new mother will find it difficult to get enough sleep each night once the newborn is at home. I remember when my son came home. I was sleeping about 3-4 hours a day. This worked well for the first week, but my body soon became too run down to function well. I had to get some assistance so that I could get a full 8 hours of sleep.

It is important for a mother to get as much sleep as she possibly can, especially during the first month. Losing weight after pregnancy will be dramatically affected if sufficient rest is not obtained. Sleep when the baby is asleep, or allow your partner to get up with him once or twice. This will allow you to get some extra rest. Not sleeping enough can lead to emotional eating and stress, two factors that are not beneficial to losing weight after pregnancy.

As you can see, weight loss after pregnancy should be done in a safe manner. It should not include starving yourself, though some moms may be too tired or simply forget meals. It is also important that you not begin an exercise plan too soon, to avoid potential injuries or discomfort. Also, getting enough sleep will affect how well you can lose weight, so it vital that you get as much shut eye as possible.
