Exercising while pregnant can be beneficial to your body and overall health. However, there are some mistakes that can be made with being active that can be potentially dangerous to you or your growing fetus. It is important to plan an effective exercise routine that will avoid these errors to ensure exercising while pregnant is helpful and not harmful.

Routine is Too Intense

The purpose of exercising while pregnant is to maintain physical health and control weight gain. It is not the time to start building muscle or losing weight. Some women participate in an exercise routine that is much too intense for a pregnant body. Workouts should only bring about a light sweat, and you should be able to breathe without much difficultly while working out.

Program Lasts Too Long

Exercising while pregnant should not be an all day thing. Most doctors recommend that pregnant women exercise 3 times a week, for no more than 30 minutes a day. It is also helpful to take a day off between sessions to ensure that your body has fully recuperated. This was my biggest mistake when exercising while pregnant. I was hoping to keep up my regular routine of 1 hour a day, 5 days a week. I didn't last long when the side effects began to set in.

Ignoring the Signs you should Stop Exercising

When you have been exercising too much while pregnant, your body has ways of telling you to stop. These can include dizziness, headache, sweating, nausea, and vomiting. If you ignore these signs and continue with your workout, you put yourself and your growing baby at a very high risk for complications. When any of these feelings begin to occur, you should immediately sit down, sip some water, and try to get cool.

Participating in High Impact Activities

Football, soccer, and wrestling are all sports to avoid when exercising while pregnant. Even if you enjoyed these activities before conceiving, your body becomes more susceptible to injury while pregnant. Also, your belly should not be exposed to harm, or your baby could suffer as well.

Consequences of these Mistakes

There are a number of things that can result if these exercising mistakes are continuously made. For some, making a mistake only once can mean problems. With intense workouts, you are more likely to sweat, which can cause dehydration. Injury is also more likely if you are working out too hard or participating in rough activities. Other consequences of these mistakes can include elevated blood pressure for you or the baby, dizziness, fainting, miscarriage, and pre-term labor.

Proper Planning for Exercising While Pregnant

A suitable exercise plan is beneficial for most pregnant women. Learning the activities that you can safely participate in is important to avoid the critical mistakes associating with being active while pregnant. When I was exercising while pregnant, I enjoyed walking and swimming, two very low impact exercises that kept my body in shape. Also, be sure your plan incorporates small amounts of exercise, as well as rest days in between.
